Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School invites you to join the conga line to our retro-Latin nightclub, Club ¡TropiCaliente! Last year this event raised $63,000 for the Hurley, supporting program enrichment, including Open Circle anti-bullying curriculum, tutoring, theater arts, visual arts, music instruction, test prep, after-school programs, mentoring and sports; facilities improvements; and community building at the school.

Hurley named “School on the Move” finalist

Rapid academic gains bring $10,000 prize

The Hurley was recently selected as one of three finalists, out of 128 Boston public schools, for the 2012 School on the Move Prize. The prize is presented annually by EdVestors, a nonprofit organization that drives change in urban schools through strategic private investment. The prize highlights the achievements of schools that are making significant progress toward closing the achievement gaps for all students.

Pasillos Pintados brings a focus on the arts

The Joseph J. Hurley, a public K–8 School in the South End, is preparing its first arts intensive, Pasillos Pintados, taking place the week of June 11–15, during which students will be able to experience the arts more deeply than they can during the rest of the school year. The focus of this year’s week will be visual arts and dance and the common theme will be the Caribbean Islands.

¡Club TropiCaliente! the Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School’s annual fundraising bash, was a smashing success on May 4, 2012. For the fourth consecutive year, the event brought members of our community together to support public education in a festive Latin nightclub environment. Thanks to the generosity of the many businesses and individuals in our community and beyond, we raised $63,000 for the school!

Hurley librarian Jennifer Varney received a Massachusetts Super Librarian Accolade Award from the Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA).  The award recognizes an exemplary librarian/library program in each of six regions across the state. Ms. Varney was recognized for her willingness to outreach to and collaborate with teachers to infuse 21st Century and Information Literacy Skills into the curriculum, her support of literacy efforts in the school, and her contributions to the extended library community.

Hurley MCAS Scores Soar

School ranks among top 5 most improved
