Principal Marjorie Soto has worked very hard this year with the Boston Public Schools facilities department to get a multi-purpose playing field built on the side asphalt yard at the Hurley School. This area, which has long been used as a parking lot during the evenings and weekends, has been a poor substitute for an athletic and play area for Hurley students and kids in the neighborhood. Children are forced to dodge broken glass, heaved asphalt, illegally parked cars, and worse during gym class and after-school activities. With the South End currently ranking the lowest of all Boston neighborhoods for open space, the Hurley field will offer a much-needed resource to both Hurley students and neighborhood residents.
This September, the Hurley will add 6th grade and K1 (4-year-old kindergarten) classes, as well as a newly designed academic- and sports-focused after-school program. Having the field in place by the fall will enable the Hurley School to meet the needs of these new age groups and to offer critical physical activity as well as academic support after school.
Construction will commence this summer with a grand opening planned for the beginning of school. The Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School (NPHS) has already raised $103,000 in private and other contributions toward the $180,000 goal. Now we need your help.
Mayor Thomas Menino and the City of Boston have already contributed $10,000 from local mitigation funds to the project. On June 28, 2007, the Mayor announced that he will award NPHS another $10,000 if we can raise at least $30,000 towards our goal by July 31.
Your generous contribution to the NPHS Hurley School Field fund will help us reach this goal. Make your gift by July 31 to enable us to claim the Mayor's challenge funds and build a beautiful new field for the children of the South End. A generation of children at play at the Hurley School will thank you.
NPHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (tax id number 20-5196270) and all contributions are fully tax-deductible.
